Seaweed Matters 2120

This project focuses on envisioning the future of 2120 (project ongoing)

The demand for biomaterials and material research is increasing globally. These new materials aim to replace materials that are not sustainable and are running out. To find out the most efficient new material in the Netherlands, it is significant to look at what the Netherlands could effectively produce. As envisioned by the WUR, the North Sea will be an important resource in the future for producing energy with floating solar panels, windmills, and for food production such as seaweed and seafood farming. Next to that seaweed will be used in the food industry, it could also be one of the most efficient future materials.

Currently, the production of biomaterials for replacing plastic and leather is slow and products are most of the time expensive due to inefficient processes. This seaweed leather could be a solution to this problem and could for example easily replace animal leather. After treatments with organic ingredients, the seaweed functions the same as animal leather. It becomes flexible and strong which is perfect for making wearables from it such as bags, wallets, and shoes.
